US National Assessment of
the Potential Consequences
of Climate Variability and Change
Atmospheric Circulation

Figure 21: Schematic illustrating changes in the jet stream, pressure systems, sea surface temperatures and storm tracks over and adjacent to North America. The Canadian and Hadley Model Scenarios both show: a) a southward-shifted jet stream over the eastern Pacific and Southwest; b) a southward-shifted and intensified Aleutian Low and weakened subtropical High in the West; and c) warmer SSTs off the coast of California. The Canadian Model Scenario also shows a reduction in the number of storms along the East Coast storm track in the Canadian model; however, the Hadley Model Scenario does not develop this storm center.
